Student-Run

Anthropology Club -- The Anthropology Club is for students interested in anthropology and human cultures. It provides students with the opportunity to observe cultural activities and a forum for discussing these observations.

College Democrats -- The College Democrats organize a number of political activities on campus and in the community in addition to hosting various speakers, lectures, and debates.

College Republicans -- The College Republicans are affiliated with the Maryland Federation of College Republicans and the College Republican National Committee. In the past year the club has participated with the Bush for President Campaign, given opportunities to travel to the Republican national Convention and the Inaugural, and given members opportunities to gain experience in campaign work.

French Club -- The French Club sponsors activities open to the campus and community that promote Francophone culture. We want to share the Francophone influence with the Washington College community. We welcome any students to join our group, even those that do not study French.

German Club -- The German Club is composed of students who share an interest in German culture and language. The club gives the students an opportunity to practice their German skills as well as to debate on current issues in Germany. The club has periodic lunches together in the dining hall, has gone on organized dinners to German restaurants in Rock Hall and Annapolis, has gone to see the Hansel and Gretel Opera in Baltimore and took a day trip to the National Gallery to see an exhibit on German expressionism.

International Relations Club -- The International Relations Club (IRC) is one of the largest clubs on campus, with over 150 members. IRC is open to anyone interested in international culture and languages. IRC sponsors various events, lectures, and trips to promote international awareness to its members and around campus. During the 2001 fall semester, IRC organized trips to Washington DC for museums/galleries, "International Awareness Week," "IRC Jeopardy," an Inner Harbor Day in Baltimore, a Halloween Party, and a beach trip to Delaware. In the spring the IRC hosts its annual "Culture Night" a combination of foreign foods, talents and costumes from all around the world. Other events include a ski trip, another trip to DC for museums, a Moroccan restaurant trip to Philadelphia and other various lectures and meetings.

International Studies Council -- The International Studies Council at Washington College is dedicated to providing information on international issues to the student, faculty, staff and Chestertown communities at large, as well as developing a forum for such issues to be discussed through various events on and off campus, which include trips to New York, Washington D.C., various Model Simulations, as well as Movie Nights, Dinners and Discussions with Guest Speakers, and Open Forums for the discussion of international issues.

Japanese Club -- The Washington College Japanese Clubwas founded in the Fall semester of 1996. It is dedicated to the appreciation, exploration, and promotion of the Japanese Culture, in all its forms, traditional and modern.

Portuguese Club -- The Portuguese Club is for those interested in Brazilian Portuguese language and culture. It provides a positive atmosphere that encourages students to learn about the diversity of Brazil through various activities. The club’s objective is to promote the rich and diverse cultures of Brazil.

Spanish Club -- The Spanish Club promotes the culture and language of both Spain and Latin America. The club currently has over 5 native speakers representing 4 different countries as well as numerous American students. At least twice per semester the club offers Latin dance lessons for the members. There is a small but expanding library of books and DVDs that are available for members to borrow or watch during movie nights. The club sponsors one or two dinners per semester where members are able to enjoy food from different Spanish speaking countries. The club also sponsors trips into Washington DC, Baltimore, or Annapolis for dinners and plays performed in Spanish.

Students for Social Awareness (Sociology Club) -- Students for Social Awareness is an active club on campus that promotes the awareness of a number of social issues that influence our society as well as our communities. Some of these social issues include: gender, age, and race which, stem to homelessness, poverty, and hunger. The club sponsors an array of different events throughout the year that contribute to the community, whether it is collecting Halloween costumes in October, collecting mittens in December, a Canned Food Drive in November and April or various other events pertaining to student involvement in the greater community. Students in Free Enterprise -- Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) is a student–run organization that creates projects incorporating different aspects of business involving students, faculty, and the community. SIFE provides leadership training, regional competitions and career fairs for thousands of college students throughout 33 countries. Working together we "Take Pride" in being not only a group of college students, but a group of people that reach out to the local communities, schools, and other organizations to teach and promote a better well being! "A head for business. A heart for the world."

Honor Societies

Alpha Kappa Delta -- Alpha Kappa Delta is the international sociology honor society dedicated to the investigation of humanity for the purpose of service and the acknowledgement and promotion of excellence in scholarship in the study of sociology. Students are eligible for membership if they are undergraduate majors or minors in sociology, are juniors or seniors who have taken at least four courses in sociology at Washington College, maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 as well as a GPA of 3.0 in their sociology coursework, and are in the upper 35% of their class.

Lambda Alpha -- Lambda Alpha is the national collegiate honor society for anthropology. It was founded for the purpose of encouraging and stimulating scholarship and research in anthropology by recognizing and honoring superior achievement in the discipline among students, faculty, and other persons engaged in the study of anthropology.

Omicron Delta Epsilon -- Omicron Delta Epsilon is the International Honor Society in Economics. Our chapter is the MU chapter of Maryland.

Phi Alpha Theta -- Phi Alpha Theta is the local chapter of the national history honor society. This student-run organization sponsors various presentations, informal discussions and a lecture series. Members are given the opportunity to present thesis proposals annually at the regional meeting at American University in Washington, DC. Students may also submit writings for publication in the Historian, the organization's academic journal.

Pi Delta Phi -- Pi Delta Phi is the National French Honor Society, founded at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1906. The Society is devoted to recognizing outstanding scholarship in the French language and to increasing the knowledge and appreciation for the cultural contributions of the French-speaking world.

Pi Lambda Theta -- Pi Lambda Theta is a national honor society recognizing high standards in the study of education.

Pi Sigma Alpha -- Pi Sigma Alpha is the local chapter of the National Political Science Honor Society. Qualified students in the upper third of their class who have demonstrated productive scholarship and personal interest in government, international relations or public administration are selected annually for membership. The organization hosts various lectures and dinners. Informal discussions and debates pertaining to the political arena are also common.

Sigma Beta Delta -- A national honor society in business, Sigma Beta Delta recognizes students in the top 20% of their class who aspire toward personal and professional improvement and a life distinguished by honorable service to humankind.

Sigma Delta Pi -- Sigma Delta Pi is a national Hispanic honorary society that is dedicated to encouraging college and university students to acquire a greater interest in and a deeper understanding of Hispanic cultures. Members of the society work to foster friendly relations and mutual respect between the nations of Hispanic speech and those of English speech.
